Smartscan Locators provides GPR concrete scanning on the Central Coast so you can cut, core, drill and anchor without hitting what is inside the slab. Our technicians scan floors, walls, columns and suspended slabs to find reinforcing steel, post-tension tendons, electrical conduits, water and gas pipes, voids and slab thickness, then mark everything on the concrete so the drilling crew can work around it.
Ground penetrating radar sends high-frequency pulses into the concrete and records what they reflect from. Unlike concrete x-ray, it needs no radiation exclusion zone and no access to both sides of the slab, so the rest of the site keeps working while we scan. Results are marked on site in real time and backed by a photo report.
Once the slab is clear, we can core it too. Our coring crews carry EMI locating equipment and hold NULCA certification, and on the Wyong Town Centre Pacific Highway upgrade we cored more than 400 locations.
Why Scan Concrete Before You Cut, Core or Drill
Cutting a post-tension tendon can compromise the slab and put people at risk, and a drilled live conduit can take out power to a whole floor. Many commercial and strata buildings around Gosford, Erina and Tuggerah sit on post-tensioned or heavily reinforced slabs, often with few or no as-built drawings left.
A scan before you drill removes the guesswork. It is usually required by builders, strata managers and structural engineers before any penetration through a suspended slab, and it costs far less than a repair.

How We Scan Concrete on the Central Coast
GPR Concrete Scanning
We scan on a marked grid with high-frequency GPR built for concrete, reading reinforcement layout, tendon position and cover depth. Where metallic conduits need confirming, we check them with EMI as well.
Post-Tension and Conduit Marking
Tendons and live conduits are marked in a different colour from rebar, with depths written on the slab. Your coring or cutting location is then shifted or confirmed before anyone drills.
Marking and Reporting
Scan areas are marked directly on the concrete and photographed. Every job includes a PDF report with photos of the markings and notes on what was found at each location.
Core Drilling After Scanning
Free hand and ute mounted coring, from small cores for vapour pins and cable runs through to large penetrations for plumbing and stormwater. We bring our own power and water and remove the slurry.

Common Questions About Concrete Scanning on the Central Coast
What can concrete scanning detect?
Rebar and mesh, post-tension tendons, electrical conduits, water and gas pipes, voids, and slab thickness. We mark each on the slab so the drilling crew can see it.
Is GPR better than concrete x-ray?
GPR is safer and more practical. It uses no radiation, needs no exclusion zone and only needs access to one side of the slab, so work around you keeps going. X-ray is still used in rare cases where extreme detail is required.
How long does a concrete scan take?
Most small scans of a few core locations take one to two hours. Larger areas and whole floors are quoted per site.
Can you find post-tension cables?
Yes. Post-tension tendons are one of the main reasons to scan. We locate and mark them so your cores and cuts are placed between them.
Can you core the slab after scanning?
Yes. Our crews core free hand or with a ute mounted rig, from small cores for vapour pins and cable runs to large penetrations, and bring their own power and water. Tell us the core sizes and depths you need and we will confirm them when we quote.
How quickly can you get to my site?
Most requests can be serviced with a couple of days’ notice. Bookings are accepted 24/7, and emergency callouts are available.
